How it works
An air fryer is a small convection oven — fast-moving hot air cooks food quicker and browns it faster than a still conventional oven. So you can go a little cooler and a little shorter.
The usual rule of thumb: drop the temperature by about 25 °F and cut the time by roughly 20%. A recipe that says 400 °F for 30 minutes becomes about 375 °F for 24 minutes in the air fryer.
Treat those numbers as a starting point. Air fryers vary and baskets are small, so check your food a few minutes early the first time and shake or flip it partway through for even cooking.
Frequently asked questions
Why lower the temperature at all?
The moving air transfers heat more efficiently, so the same dial setting cooks hotter than in a conventional oven. Dropping about 25 °F keeps the outside from browning before the inside is done.
Does everything convert this way?
Most roasted and baked foods do, but delicate items like cakes and anything with a wet batter can be trickier in the rushing air. When in doubt, start with the estimate and watch closely.
Should I preheat the air fryer?
A short preheat of a couple of minutes helps things crisp up and cook evenly, much like an oven. If your model preheats fast, factor that in and still check your food a little early.
