How it works

Generations are defined by the birth years they cover. The calculator checks your year against the widely used ranges — Gen Z runs 1997 to 2012, Millennials 1981 to 1996, and so on — and returns the one that fits.

These boundaries come mostly from demographic research and common usage rather than a single official body, so the edges are a little fuzzy. Someone born in 1996 or 1997 sits right on the Millennial–Gen Z line, and different sources may nudge it a year either way.

For years before the Silent Generation or beyond Gen Alpha, the tool tells you the year sits outside the commonly named generations rather than inventing a label.

Frequently asked questions

Which years count as Millennials?

This calculator uses 1981 to 1996 for Millennials, the range popularised by Pew Research. People born right at either end sometimes feel like they straddle the neighbouring generation, and that's normal.

Are these ranges official?

Not really. Generation labels come from researchers, journalists, and common usage rather than a governing authority, so the exact cutoffs vary slightly between sources. The tool uses the most widely cited boundaries.

What's Gen Alpha?

Gen Alpha is the generation born from around 2013 onward — the children of many Millennials. They're the first cohort born entirely within the 21st century.
