Words Per Page Calculator
Estimate how many pages a word count fills, or how many words a page holds, at common spacings.
These are rough estimates. Real page counts shift with font, margins, headings, and paragraph breaks, so use them as a ballpark, not a hard rule.
How it works
For 12pt Times New Roman with normal one-inch margins, a single-spaced page holds roughly 500 words and a double-spaced page about 250. So a 2,000-word essay is around four double-spaced pages. Pick your spacing and the tool does the division.
It works both ways. Give it a word count to get a page estimate, or give it a target page count — say, a five-page paper — to see how many words you need to write to fill it. Handy when an assignment is set in pages, not words.
Treat the number as a ballpark. Switch fonts, widen the margins, add headings or block quotes, and the real count shifts. A page of dialogue with lots of short lines holds far fewer words than a solid block of prose.
Frequently asked questions
How many words is a double-spaced page?
About 250 words for 12pt Times New Roman with standard margins. Single spacing roughly doubles that to 500, and 1.5 spacing sits in between at around 333 words per page.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Roughly two double-spaced pages or one single-spaced page in 12pt. Larger fonts, wider margins, or a spacier font like Arial will push it slightly longer.
Why doesn't my document match exactly?
Page count depends on font, size, margins, headings, lists, and how many paragraph breaks you have. This tool assumes plain 12pt prose, so anything with lots of white space or big headings will run longer than the estimate.
