How it works

The most popular way to roll a D&D character is 4d6 drop lowest: for each of the six abilities you roll four six-sided dice and throw away the smallest one, then add the remaining three. It nudges your scores upward compared to plain 3d6, which is why heroes tend to be a cut above average.

Each roll here shows all four dice with the dropped die crossed out, so you can see exactly how a 16 or an 18 came together. Next to each score is its ability modifier, the plus or minus that actually gets added to your rolls in play.

At the bottom you get the sum of all six scores and your total modifier across the set — a quick way to judge whether this batch is worth keeping or whether you'd rather reroll and try your luck again.

Frequently asked questions

What is 4d6 drop lowest?

You roll four six-sided dice, discard the lowest, and total the other three. Repeat six times, once per ability. It averages around 12.24 per score, a bit higher than the 10.5 you'd get from 3d6.

How do ability modifiers work?

The modifier is the score minus 10, divided by two and rounded down. So a 10 or 11 gives +0, a 14 gives +2, and an 8 gives −1. That number is what you add to attacks, saves, and checks.

Should I keep low rolls?

That's between you and your table. Some groups reroll if the total modifier is too low or no score beats a certain number. This tool shows the total modifier so you can decide quickly.
