Word Counter
Paste or type, and watch the word count, character count, sentences, and reading time update live — nothing leaves your browser.
How it works
The counter splits your text on spaces to count words, tallies every character (with and without spaces), and looks for sentence-ending punctuation to count sentences. It all happens as you type, right on your device.
Reading time uses 200 words per minute, a common average for silent reading. It's a rough guide for how long a post or email will take someone to get through, not a stopwatch.
Because everything runs in your browser, you can safely paste a private draft, a cover letter, or unpublished copy — none of it is uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter save or send my text?
No. It works entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server or stored, so you can paste sensitive or unpublished text without worry.
How is reading time calculated?
It divides the word count by 200 words per minute, a typical silent-reading pace, and rounds up. A 1,000-word article comes out to about a 5-minute read.
How does it count characters with and without spaces?
Characters counts every keystroke including spaces and line breaks; 'no spaces' strips all whitespace first. Social platforms and meta tags usually count the version with spaces.
