How it works

Square footage is just length times width. Measure each wall in feet, multiply the two, and you've got the floor area — a 12 by 10 room comes out to 120 square feet.

Got an L-shaped room or a few spaces to cover? Break the area into rectangles, add a row for each one, and the calculator sums them into a single total. Handy when you're pricing carpet or flooring for the whole floor.

The square-yards number is there because carpet is often sold by the yard. Nine square feet make a square yard, so we divide the total by nine to save you the step.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an L-shaped or odd room?

Split it into rectangles, measure each one on its own, and add a row here for each. The tool totals them for you, which is far easier than wrestling with one irregular shape.

Should I measure in feet or inches?

Feet keeps it simple since the result is in square feet. If a wall is 12 feet 6 inches, enter it as 12.5 — every extra inch is about 0.083 of a foot.

What is a square yard and why show it?

It's a 3-by-3-foot square, so nine square feet. Carpet and some flooring are priced by the yard, so having both numbers means you can talk to the supplier in whatever unit they use.

Does this include walls or just the floor?

Just the floor area. For wall area — like when you're painting — use the Paint Calculator, which works from the room's perimeter and ceiling height instead.
