How it works
Before an exam it helps to know exactly what you're chasing. This works backward from your goal: given where you stand now and how heavy the final is, it solves for the one number that gets you there.
Picture it as a mix. Your current grade covers everything but the final, and the final fills the rest. If you're at 88% and the final is worth 20%, you'd only need a 68 on it to keep an A- — the other 80% of the grade is already carrying you.
Flip the weight up and the math gets less forgiving. When the final counts for half the course, a rough stretch beforehand means you need a much stronger showing to recover, and the tool spells out just how much.
Frequently asked questions
What if the score I need comes out above 100%?
That means the target is out of reach from the final alone — even a perfect exam wouldn't lift you there. The tool flags it so you can pick a more realistic goal or, where allowed, look into extra credit.
Where do I find how much the final is worth?
Check your syllabus. It's usually listed as a percentage of the overall grade, like 'Final exam: 25%.' That percentage is exactly what goes in the final-worth field.
Can the needed score come out negative?
It can, and that's good news. A negative or zero result means you've already secured your target — even bombing the final wouldn't drop you below it.
